How hot rolled coil is used in Pakistan

Pakistan has no operating hot strip mill, so every tonne of hot rolled coil consumed in the country is imported. HRC arrives either as finished product for fabrication, or as the substrate that domestic mills pickle and cold-roll into cold rolled coil and then galvanise into GP coil.

The largest domestic uses are welded pipe and tube, structural fabrication and frames, and general engineering work. Thickness and grade selection is usually driven by the welding and forming the fabricator intends to do, rather than by price alone.

Duty position on hot rolled coil

Hot rolled coil is the one flat steel product in Pakistan that carries no anti-dumping duty from any origin. That is not true of cold rolled, galvanised or colour coated coil, all of which carry anti-dumping measures on Chinese material. If you are comparing HRC against a coated product, the duty position is a material part of the landed-cost comparison — see our guide to the anti-dumping duty on Galvalume and how to read a mill test certificate before you accept a coil.
