HRC and CRC: What Actually Separates Them

Hot Rolled Coil is produced by rolling steel at high temperature, above its recrystallization point, which makes it easier and cheaper to shape but leaves a rougher, scaled surface and looser dimensional tolerance. Cold Rolled Coil starts as HRC that is then pickled to remove scale and rolled again at room temperature, producing a smoother surface, tighter thickness tolerance, and improved mechanical properties.

This processing difference is the reason CRC costs more per ton than HRC, and why the choice between them usually comes down to what the end application actually needs.

When to Choose HRC

HRC is the right choice for structural applications, pipe and tube manufacturing, heavy equipment fabrication, and any use case where surface finish and tight tolerance are not critical. Its lower cost per ton and wide thickness range, typically from around 1.2mm to 25mm, make it the default choice for structural steel, line pipe, and general fabrication work across Pakistan's construction and engineering sectors.

Buyers working on projects where the steel will be welded, cut, and structurally load-bearing rather than visually exposed generally get better economics from HRC.

When to Choose CRC

CRC is the better fit for automotive body panels, appliance manufacturing, furniture, and any product where surface appearance, weldability, and precise thickness matter. Its smoother finish also makes it the standard base material for further coating into galvanized (GP), Galvalume, or pre-painted (PPGI) products, since coating quality depends heavily on the smoothness of the substrate.

If your end product will be painted, plated, or visible to the end consumer, CRC (or a coated product built on CRC) is almost always the right specification.

Cost and Availability Considerations in Pakistan

CRC typically trades at a meaningful premium over HRC due to the additional rolling and pickling process, and lead times can be longer depending on whether it is sourced locally or imported. Buyers should always confirm current CRC-HRC spread before finalizing a bill of materials, since the gap moves with both international steel cycles and local mill capacity utilization.
