PPGI vs GI vs Galvalume: Choosing the Right Coated Steel for Roofing and Cladding

Three Coated Steel Options, Three Different Trade-offs

Pakistan's roofing and cladding market relies on three main coated flat steel products: GI (galvanized iron, zinc-coated), Galvalume or ZAM (aluminum-zinc alloy coated), and PPGI (pre-painted galvanized iron, a colour-coated version of GI). Each is built on a CRC base but differs in coating composition, corrosion resistance, cost, and finished appearance.

Choosing the wrong one either wastes money on unnecessary performance or creates a maintenance problem within a few years of installation, so the decision is worth getting right at the specification stage.

GI: The Cost-Effective Standard

Standard galvanized (GI) sheet uses a pure zinc coating and remains the most widely used option for general roofing, purlins, and fabrication where moderate corrosion resistance is sufficient and budget is the primary constraint. It performs well in typical inland environments but corrodes faster than Galvalume in coastal or high-humidity zones.

Galvalume / ZAM: Superior Corrosion Resistance

Galvalume, and the newer ZAM coating, combine aluminum and zinc (and in ZAM's case, magnesium) to deliver corrosion resistance that can be several times longer than standard GI, particularly in coastal cities like Karachi where salt air accelerates rust. The trade-off is a higher price point and, in Pakistan specifically, exposure to anti-circumvention duties currently affecting Galvalume-category imports, which buyers should factor into landed cost before ordering.

For long-life roofing, industrial cladding, and coastal construction, the extended service life of Galvalume/ZAM often justifies the premium over a building's lifecycle even after accounting for the higher upfront cost.

PPGI: Coated for Corrosion and Appearance

PPGI adds a baked-on paint layer over a galvanized base, combining zinc's corrosion protection with a durable, colour-finished surface. It is the standard choice for architectural roofing, prefabricated buildings, and cladding where both weather resistance and visual finish matter, and is available in a wide range of RAL colours to match design requirements.

PPGI generally costs more than plain GI but less than achieving equivalent appearance through separate coating and painting processes after installation.
