ZAM is a coated steel product where the base metal is coated with a zinc-aluminum-magnesium alloy rather than pure zinc or the aluminum-zinc blend used in standard Galvalume. The addition of magnesium significantly improves corrosion resistance, particularly at cut edges and in environments with high humidity or salt exposure, which is one of ZAM's main advantages over both GI and standard Galvalume.
Standard GI relies on a thicker zinc layer for protection and sacrifices itself over time through galvanic action, while Galvalume's aluminum-zinc coating offers better barrier protection but weaker edge protection. ZAM's magnesium content gives it superior self-healing corrosion resistance at cut edges and scratches, an area where both GI and Galvalume are comparatively weaker, making it attractive for fabricated products where cutting and forming expose bare edges.
ZAM is increasingly used in solar mounting structures, HVAC components, automotive parts, and coastal or industrial construction where long service life and edge corrosion resistance justify the higher material cost. For solar installations especially, where structures are outdoors for 20+ year design lives and involve significant cut-edge exposure from fabrication, ZAM's edge protection is a genuine performance advantage over standard coatings.
ZAM and Galvalume-category imports have been affected by anti-circumvention duties in Pakistan in recent periods, which materially changes the cost comparison against local GI alternatives and should be checked before specifying ZAM on a project.
